Cockroach Control for Houston Homes & Businesses

The roach you saw at midnight is rarely all by itself. Most cockroaches spend the day packed into cracks you will never look behind: the hinge gap of a cabinet, the motor housing under a refrigerator, the wall void behind a dishwasher. Our licensed pest professionals identify which cockroach you are dealing with, find where it is actually living, and match the treatment to the species, so the problem doesn’t rebuild from a single egg case. Serving residential and commercial properties from Tomball across the Houston metro.

Why Houston Is Cockroach Country

Cockroaches are tropical insects, and the Gulf Coast gives them a climate that is close enough. Heat and humidity speed up every stage of their life cycle, mild winters rarely knock outdoor populations back, and the region’s storm sewers, live oaks, palms, and thick mulch beds hold enormous numbers of roaches within a few feet of the average slab foundation. In North Houston, the American cockroach alone is one of the highest-volume pest calls of the year.

What most homeowners don’t realize is that “cockroach” covers two very different problems. The large roaches Houstonians call palmetto bugs (American, smokybrown, and Australian cockroaches) live primarily outdoors and wander inside through drains, weep holes, attic vents, and gaps under doors. The small German cockroach never lives outdoors at all. It arrives in grocery bags, cardboard boxes, used appliances, and secondhand furniture, then breeds inside the kitchen and bathroom faster than almost any other household pest. A single German cockroach egg case holds dozens of nymphs, and a population can multiply many times over in a few months.

That difference is why a can of spray from the hardware store rarely solves anything. Spraying a big outdoor roach on the kitchen floor does nothing about the population living in the mulch, the gutter, or the sewer line it came from. And spraying German cockroaches with a repellent product scatters them deeper into wall voids and neighboring units, where they keep breeding. Effective cockroach control has to address three things simultaneously:

  1. the cockroaches present now, including the ones hiding where you can’t see them
  2. the egg cases and nymphs that will become the next generation
  3. the moisture, food, harborage, and entry points that make your structure attractive in the first place.

EnviRx builds treatment around these specifications. We identify the species first, because an indoor German cockroach infestation and a palmetto bug pushing in from the flower beds call for completely different strategies. Then we treat where they live and feed, use baits and growth regulators that roaches carry back to the rest of the population, and show you which conditions on your property are working against us.

Signs You Have a Cockroach Infestation

One large roach on the patio after a summer rain is a roach on the patio. These are the signals that point to an established population rather than a stray.

Roaches Out in Daylight

Cockroaches are nocturnal and avoid light. Seeing them on counters, walls, or inside cabinets during the day usually means the hiding spots are crowded and the population has outgrown its harborage.

Pepper-Like Droppings

Small black specks, similar to coffee grounds or ground pepper, in drawers, along cabinet edges, on top of door frames, and around appliance motors. Larger roaches leave cylindrical droppings with ridges along the sides.

Egg Cases (Oothecae)

Brown, purse-shaped capsules about a quarter inch long tucked into cracks, behind furniture, under shelf liners, or glued to the underside of surfaces. Empty, split-open cases mean a generation has already hatched.

Smear Marks and Shed Skins

Dark, irregular smudges where walls meet floors or around pipe penetrations, along with translucent cast skins from molting nymphs. Both build up where roaches travel and rest every night.

A Musty, Oily Odor

Heavy infestations produce a stale, sweetish smell in cabinets, pantries, and closets. It comes from their aggregation pheromones and droppings, and it lingers even after cleaning until the population is gone.

Small Roaches in the Kitchen

Half-inch, light brown roaches, or tiny dark nymphs with a pale stripe, near the sink, dishwasher, stove, or coffee maker. This is the signature of German cockroaches and is worth acting on immediately.

Common Cockroaches in the Houston Area

Correct identification drives the treatment plan. Different species live in different places, eat different baits, and get inside in different ways. Our technicians identify what is actually present before recommending anything. You can read more about other pests they may be looking for in our pest library.

German Cockroach

Indoor breeder · Fastest-multiplying · Highest priority

About half an inch long, tan to light brown, with two dark parallel stripes on the shield behind the head. Lives exclusively indoors, clustered in warm, humid spots near food and water: cabinet hinges, under sinks, inside dishwashers, microwaves, coffee makers, and refrigerator motor housings. The female carries her egg case until it is nearly ready to hatch, which shields the next generation from many treatments. German cockroaches are notorious for developing resistance to common insecticides and even for learning to avoid certain bait formulas, which is why professional rotation of baits and growth regulators matters.

American cockroach on a wicker chair with a pink and purple cushion

American Cockroach (“Palmetto Bug”)

Largest common roach · Enters from drains and sewers

Reddish-brown and up to two inches long, with a pale yellowish band around the shield behind the head. The roach most Houstonians mean when they say palmetto bug or water bug. It lives in storm drains, sewer lines, crawl spaces, tree holes, and mulch, and it gets into homes through floor drains, plumbing gaps, weep holes, and under garage doors. Adults can glide and fly short distances in hot weather. Heavy rain that floods the sewers is one of the most reliable triggers for a wave of sightings indoors.

Smokeybrown cockroach on a vine with brick home in the background

Smokybrown Cockroach

Very common on the Gulf Coast · Strong flier · Attracted to lights

Large, uniformly dark mahogany brown, and shiny, with no markings on the head shield. Smokybrowns lose moisture easily, so they live in damp, sheltered places like gutters, tree canopies, ivy, firewood stacks, mulch, and attics. They fly readily toward porch lights at night and often enter through soffits, roof gaps, and open doors. Wooded lots and mature landscaping see the heaviest pressure.

Australian cockroach on gray and beige colored and cracked pavement

Australian Cockroach

Outdoor roach · Common in landscaping

Similar in size and color to the American cockroach, but with bright yellow streaks along the outer edges of the front wings and a crisp yellow border on the head shield. Prefers warm, moist outdoor habitat such as flower beds, potted plants, and greenhouses, and moves indoors through the same gaps as its larger relative.

Asian cockroach on beige rock corner showing longer wings

Asian Cockroach

Look-alike · Lives outdoors · Flies to lights

Nearly identical to the German cockroach in size and markings, which leads to a lot of unnecessary alarm. The difference is behavior: Asian cockroaches live in leaf litter, turf, and mulch, fly well, and are drawn to lit windows and doors at dusk. They can show up indoors in large numbers on warm evenings but generally do not establish breeding populations inside. Telling the two apart changes the entire treatment approach.

brown banded cockroach on plain white background

Brown-Banded Cockroach

Indoor breeder · Prefers warm, dry spots

Small, roughly the size of a German cockroach, with two light bands across the wings and abdomen. Unlike the German cockroach, it does not need to stay near water, so it spreads through bedrooms, closets, behind picture frames, inside electronics, and high on walls. Less common than German cockroaches, but often missed because people focus mainly on inspecting the kitchen.

Oriental Cockroach

Oriental Cockroach

Cool, damp areas · Slow-moving

Dark brown to shiny black, about an inch long, with short wing pads on the male and almost none on the female. Neither sex flies. Associated with drains, crawl spaces, water meters, and damp debris. Less common in Houston than farther north, but it does turn up around persistent moisture problems.

Surinam Cockroach

Burrowing roach · Arrives in potted plants

Glossy dark brown to black with a shiny head shield, about an inch long. It burrows in loose soil, mulch, compost, and potting mix, and frequently comes indoors inside houseplants and nursery containers. The populations found in the U.S. are all female and reproduce without mating, so a single individual brought inside in a planter can start a colony.

Palmetto Bug, Water Bug, or Something Else?

Houston has a lot of local names for roaches, and a few true look-alikes. We’ll tell you honestly what you are looking at rather than treating something that doesn’t need it.

“Palmetto Bugs” Are Cockroaches

Across Texas and the Southeast, palmetto bug is a regional nickname, usually for American, smokybrown, or Australian cockroaches. The name is softer, but the biology is the same, and so is the need to address where they are coming from.

“Water Bugs” Are Usually Cockroaches Too

Most large dark “water bugs” found near drains and in bathrooms are American or Oriental cockroaches. True giant water bugs are aquatic insects with grasping front legs that live in ponds and pools and fly to lights. They don’t infest homes, but they can deliver a painful bite if handled.

Ground Beetles and Crickets

Dark ground beetles and field crickets wander into garages and entryways after rain and are often mistaken for roaches at a glance. Beetles have hard wing covers that meet in a straight line down the back and short antennae; crickets have enlarged jumping hind legs. Neither breeds indoors the way cockroaches do.

Cockroaches and Your Health: What Houston Homeowners Should Know

Cockroaches don’t bite people in any meaningful way, and a sighting is not a reason to panic. But they are more than a nuisance. Their droppings, shed skins, saliva, and dead bodies contain proteins that are a well-documented indoor allergen and a recognized trigger for asthma, particularly in children. Because they travel between drains, garbage, and food preparation surfaces, they can also carry bacteria such as Salmonella and E. coli on their bodies and contaminate food, dishes, and utensils. For households with asthma, allergies, infants, or anyone with a weakened immune system, a cockroach problem is worth taking seriously and addressing quickly.

Where They Actually Hide

Indoors, cockroaches want warmth, moisture, and a tight crack that touches their back and belly at the same time. On a typical Houston property that means the gaps around dishwasher and sink plumbing, the motor compartments of refrigerators and freezers, cabinet hinges and drawer slides, the voids behind stoves and microwaves, water heater closets, bathroom vanities, electrical outlets on shared walls, and stacks of cardboard and paper bags. Outdoors it means mulch beds, gutters, tree holes, palm crowns, ivy and ground cover, firewood, irrigation and meter boxes, sewer cleanouts, and storm drains.

What to Do Before We Arrive

  • Skip the foggers and “bug bombs.” They rarely reach the cracks where roaches hide, they scatter German cockroaches deeper into walls and neighboring rooms, and they can interfere with professional baits.
  • Hold off on spraying cabinets and baseboards with store-bought repellent sprays, which can keep roaches away from the baits that will actually eliminate them.
  • Clear out the cabinet under the kitchen sink and the bathroom vanities so we can inspect and treat them.
  • Store food, including pet food, in sealed hard plastic or glass containers, and don’t leave dishes or pet bowls out overnight.
  • Take trash out nightly and keep indoor and outdoor bins lidded.
  • If you can, note where and when you’ve seen activity. That helps us find the harborage faster.

Gulf Coast Cockroach Calendar

Indoor German cockroaches breed year-round regardless of season. The outdoor species follow a predictable rhythm tied to temperature, rainfall, and flooding. Knowing the cycle is what lets us treat ahead of the problem instead of reacting to it.

SeasonWhat’s HappeningWhat We Focus On
January – FebruaryOutdoor roaches slow down, but cold fronts push American and smokybrown cockroaches into attics, garages, wall voids, and crawl spaces. German cockroaches keep breeding indoors with no seasonal break.Interior inspection and baiting, attic and garage harborage work, and exclusion repairs while outdoor activity is low.
March – MayWarming temperatures and spring rains wake outdoor populations. Roaches mate, egg cases hatch, and Asian cockroaches start flying to lights in the evening. The strategic window. Perimeter treatment, granular bait in mulch and beds, gutter and tree-line attention, and sealing entry points before populations compound.
June – AugustPeak heat and humidity drive rapid reproduction. Large roaches fly and glide on hot nights, and dry spells push them toward irrigated beds, A/C condensate lines, and indoor moisture.Sustained perimeter and harborage treatment, drain and plumbing-penetration work, and lighting and moisture recommendations.
September – NovemberPeak of hurricane and heavy-rain season. Flooded storm drains and sewers push American cockroaches up through drains, cleanouts, and weep holes. Most “they’re suddenly everywhere” calls happen now.Post-storm response, drain and sewer-entry treatment, weep hole and door-sweep attention, and follow-up to confirm activity has dropped.
DecemberCold snaps drive outdoor roaches indoors and into attics. Holiday cooking, grocery deliveries, and boxes coming in and out give German cockroaches easy rides into kitchens.Kitchen and pantry inspection, attic and garage treatment, and exclusion ahead of the winter lull.

If you only treat cockroaches when you see them, you’re always reacting after the egg cases have hatched. Properties on a scheduled plan keep the exterior barrier in place before spring breeding and after every major rain event.

Our Cockroach Control Process

1. Inspection and Identification

We inspect the kitchen, bathrooms, laundry, water heater area, garage, and accessible attic, then walk the full exterior perimeter. We pull out drawers, check behind and beneath appliances, look at plumbing penetrations, drains, weep holes, gutters, and mulch beds, and place monitoring traps where needed to pinpoint activity. We identify the species and tell you whether you’re dealing with an indoor infestation, outdoor roaches getting in, or both.

2. Treatment Plan

German cockroaches, palmetto bugs, and burrowing species each respond to different approaches, so the plan is matched to what we actually found. We explain what we’re using, where, and why, along with anything on the property that is likely to keep working against the treatment.

3. Targeted Treatment

Indoors, we place professional baits directly into the cracks and voids where roaches live, add insect growth regulators to stop the next generation from reaching adulthood, and treat wall voids and plumbing chases where appropriate. Outdoors, we treat the foundation perimeter, entry points, mulch beds, and other harborage, and we address drains and sewer entry points for American cockroaches. The focus is precise placement rather than spraying open surfaces.

4. Exclusion and Sanitation Recommendations

Treatment works better when the structure cooperates. We flag leaking plumbing, dripping A/C condensate lines, gaps around pipes and wires, failed door sweeps, unscreened weep holes and vents, open drains, cardboard storage, and mulch piled against the slab, and tell you which fixes will actually move the needle.

5. Follow-Up and Monitoring

Egg cases that were already in place will hatch after the first service, so one visit is rarely the whole job, especially with German cockroaches. We schedule follow-ups to catch that next wave, check monitors, refresh baits, and adjust if a particular area is holding out. Ongoing plans keep the exterior barrier maintained through the seasonal peaks and after heavy rain.

What You Can Do Between Visits

These make a measurable difference and cost almost nothing.

  • Fix dripping faucets, leaking supply lines, and sweating pipes under sinks. Roaches can survive weeks without food but only days without water.
  • Wipe counters, stovetops, and the floor around appliances nightly, and clean crumbs from toasters and under burners.
  • Unpack groceries and deliveries promptly and recycle cardboard boxes and paper bags rather than storing them.
  • Inspect used appliances, furniture, and potted plants before bringing them inside.
  • Keep drain stoppers in rarely used tubs and floor drains, and run water in guest bathrooms so traps don’t dry out.
  • Replace worn door sweeps and weatherstripping, particularly on the garage door.
  • Seal gaps around pipes, cable lines, and A/C penetrations, and clean gutters regularly.
  • Pull mulch back a few inches from the foundation, trim plants off the siding, and store firewood away from the house.

Cockroach Control Across the Houston Metro

Our office sits at 11701 Holderreith Road in Tomball, and our routes cover the northwest Houston corridor and beyond. Pressure isn’t identical everywhere. Heavily wooded lots in The Woodlands and Magnolia see more smokybrown cockroaches coming down from tree canopies and gutters, while Katy and Cypress subdivisions with fresh mulch beds, retention ponds, and storm drain networks see more American cockroaches and post-rain surges. Apartment communities and restaurants across the metro deal most often with German cockroaches.

Frequently Asked Questions

I saw one big cockroach. Does that mean I have an infestation?

Not necessarily. A single large American or smokybrown cockroach indoors, especially after heavy rain or a cold front, is often a wanderer from outside. It does tell you there is an entry point and an outdoor population nearby, which is worth addressing. Small, light brown roaches in the kitchen are a different story. Those are usually German cockroaches, and seeing even a few typically means a breeding population is already established.

How long does it take to get rid of German cockroaches?

Most homes see a sharp drop in activity within the first one to two weeks as roaches feed on bait and carry it back to their hiding spots. Full elimination usually takes several weeks and two to three visits, because egg cases that were already present will hatch after the first treatment. Heavy infestations, apartments with shared walls, and commercial kitchens can take longer. Follow-up visits are built into the plan for exactly this reason.

Why am I seeing more roaches right after treatment?

It’s common for roaches to become more visible for a few days after service. Treatment flushes them out of their hiding places, and affected roaches often wander into the open before they die. That’s a sign the treatment is reaching them. If activity hasn’t clearly declined after about two weeks, let us know and we’ll come back and adjust.

Is cockroach treatment safe around children and pets?

We select products and placement with households in mind. Most indoor work is crack-and-crevice baiting placed inside gaps, hinges, and voids where children and pets can’t reach, rather than spraying open floors and counters. Your technician will walk through any re-entry or drying guidance for the specific materials used before leaving. If you have reptiles, birds, fish, or another sensitive situation, tell us when you schedule so we can plan around it.

Do roach bombs and foggers work?

Rarely, and they often make the problem worse. Fogger mist settles on open surfaces, while cockroaches hide deep inside cracks and appliances where it never reaches. With German cockroaches, foggers tend to scatter the population into wall voids and adjoining rooms, and residue on surfaces can make roaches avoid baits. Store-bought sprays have the same problem on a smaller scale.

My house is clean. Why do I have roaches?

Cleanliness helps, but it doesn’t make a home roach-proof. German cockroaches hitchhike in on groceries, boxes, and used appliances. Palmetto bugs come in from mulch, gutters, attics, and the sewer system no matter how clean the kitchen is. Moisture is often the bigger driver: a slow leak under a sink or a dripping A/C line can support roaches in a spotless house.

Why do roaches come up through my drains?

American cockroaches live in sewer and storm drain systems, and they climb up through floor drains, unused tub and shower drains, and plumbing gaps, especially when heavy rain floods the lines below. Dried-out drain traps in guest bathrooms and laundry rooms are a common route. Keeping traps filled with water, using drain covers, and having us treat drain and cleanout entry points makes a real difference.

Do cockroaches fly?

Some do. American cockroaches glide and fly short distances in hot weather, smokybrown cockroaches are strong fliers that are attracted to lights, and Asian cockroaches fly readily at dusk. German cockroaches have wings but almost never fly. Oriental cockroaches don’t fly at all.

I live in an apartment. Can you still help?

Yes, though shared walls and plumbing mean German cockroaches can move between units. We treat your unit thoroughly and seal the common pathways we can reach. For lasting results, it helps when neighboring units are inspected and treated at the same time, so we also work directly with property managers and HOAs on building-wide programs.

Will one treatment be enough?

For a few outdoor roaches wandering in, an initial service with exterior treatment and exclusion recommendations may be enough for a specific time frame of a month or less. For German cockroaches, almost never, because the egg cases already in your home will hatch after the first visit. Given Houston’s year-round outdoor pressure, homes that stay roach-free over the long run are usually on a recurring plan that maintains the exterior barrier through the seasonal peaks.

Do you offer commercial cockroach control for restaurants?

Yes. We provide scheduled monitoring and treatment programs for restaurants, commercial kitchens, food service operations, retail, warehouses, medical facilities, and multi-unit properties. That includes kitchen equipment and drain treatment, resistance management through bait rotation, service documentation for health inspections and audits, and scheduling that stays out of the way of your operating hours.
